Printing Thick Media Guide

Note

The purpose of this guide is to provide the operator with a quick reference of steps to follow when printing media substrate thicker than 3/4 inches (19.05 mm) and to mask off sections correctly. The printer is capable of printing on media substrate up to 6 inches (152.4 mm), but will require an override in the software for anything above the 3/4 inches (19.05 mm) height restriction.

Caution

NOTE: The instructions lines below must be followed to prevent the print head (s) from being permanently damaged if the LED light reflects back up and cures the ink on the print head surface (s).

Get started to print thick material

Important

  • Any media substrate thicker than 3/4 inches (19.05 mm) will require the customer to contact Digitech to override the maximum height restriction set in the software.

  • The material used to create the masked sections should be no less than 1/8 inches (3.175 mm) in height than the media substrate being printed.

  • Darker material is also recommended to create the masked sections to minimize the LED light reflection.

  • Darker material is recommended to create the masked sections all around the media substrate (s) as listed in the guidelines and should be no less than 1/8 inches (3.175 mm) in height than the media substrate (s) being printed.

  • Too low of masked sections can cause the LED light to reflect back up and cure the ink inside the print head (s).

Masking the Table

The diagram below shows to how properly mask sections when printing a single piece.

_images/thick-media-1.png
  • Along the X-axis the area (left and right sides), the area masked off should be a minimum of 4.5 inches (114.3 mm) on each side.

  • Along the Y-axis (front and back), the area masked off should be a minimum of 9 inches (228.6 mm)

  • Space in between the media substrates also needs to be masked off using the guidelines listed in the previous steps.

The diagram below shows to how properly mask sections when printing multiple pieces.

_images/thick-media-2.png
  • Along the X-axis the area (left and right sides), the area masked off should be a minimum of 4.5 inches (114.3 mm) on each side.

  • Along the Y-axis (front and back), the area masked off should a minimum of 9 inches (228.6 mm)

  • Space in between the media substrates also needs to be masked off using the guidelines listed in the previous steps.

Creating a Jig

  • It is recommended a jig should be created if multiple pieces are going to printed as seen in the Diagram 2.

  • Darker material is recommended to create the masked sections all around the media substrate (s) as listed in the guidelines and should be no less than 1/8 inches (3.175 mm) in height than the media substrate (s) being printed.

Caution

Too low of masked sections can cause the LED light to reflect back up and cure the ink inside the print head (s).
